At Conquistador K-9, we are committed to helping all people understand and experience the freedom, joy, and sense of security that comes with owning a World Champion quality, personal and family Presa Canario guardian.
Our Spainsh Perro De Presa Canarios bloodlines are hand selected directly from the place they originated from, the Canary Islands, for their agility, beauty, intelligence and temperament. Your exact specifications are met by experienced, certified trainers and producers of the best Presa Canario in the world today. We have continued to produce Presa Canario that are capable of being Champions in the show ring, Certified Protection Trained Warriors, and fully functional family raised Companions, generation after generation.
Our training includes Show Conformation, Advanced Obedience, Personal and Executive Protection, Tracking and Retrieval, and other special skills. We can train to meet your specific needs, from imprinted puppies to complete executive level protection K-9.

with Outstanding Temperament, and Working Functionality who are also Dedicated, Obedient Family Companions.
We begin through strategic evaluation, traveling the world for the best representations of the Presa Canario. We only breed for our program and do not goal to produce anything more than the program need, always looking for improvements with any new add to our breeding or training goals.
We consistently evaluate all our dogs, from birth and throughout their careers. Beginning with Early Developmental Stimulation and Puppy Aptitude Testing, our dogs receive constant analysis from independent, documented sources. Either receiving critiques in the show ring, or through testing in field trials, our adults and puppies are held to Best in the World Standards.
Each breeding is carefully selected based on each dogs complete temperament, health, and conformation evaluations. We will never create a pairing that contains what we would consider improvable qualities of similar areas in both the sir (father) and dam (mother). For instance, if there were a sire whose cranial composition we believed could be improved, and a dam whose cranial composition could be improved, we would likely not breed this pairing. The primary items we review for pairing are first health, next temperament, and lastly conformation (the dogs look and structure).

With so many options for guardian breeds we often get asked, why does Conquistador K-9 prefer the Presa Canario?
The Presa Canario is a very serious breed, for a very serious job - your family's protection. Unlike the other guardian breeds we have worked with, the bloodlines from the Presa Canario are considered rare and expressiveness of a desired phenotype is arguably a higher ratio through correct breeding management of the available genotype to arrange a more homzygous bloodline for static program management results.
Now, that's only part of the rational...
At Conquistador K-9, we have fallen in love with this breed as it fully supports our Mission more completely than any other breed we have worked with. While Conquistador dogs will bite the "bad guy" if it's necessary, they are naturally calm, stable minded and patient family dogs. They do not require "special handling" or a secured kennel facility to keep them out of trouble when they're not on duty. Our dogs are always on duty and never nervous or "edgy" under any circumstance. Many working dogs employed by civilian families and police agencies present serious risk of liability with high prey drives that do not make for naturally stable dogs in a family environment.
Dog Prey Drive .vs Pack Protection/Defense Drive
These traits are precisely what characterizes the typical, well bred, properly socialized and trained Presa Canario. While they do have good prey drive their more dominant drive is that for pack protection and defense. Conquistador K-9 would argue that less dominant prey drive and more dominant pack protection drive is of great advantage in any Personal Protection dog, but we recognize it's a debatable issue. However, it is a self-evident fact that for a family companion guardian dog certainly nothing else is appropriate.
Prey drive by definition is to chase and kill. Prey drive is the instinctual drive that causes animals to chase and kill smaller animals in order to feed themselves. Inappropriate activation of a dog's prey drive is the primary cause of most inappropriate and the most serious dog bite incidents. Thoroughly trained high prey drive dogs can be difficult to control - even for professionals.
Pack protection drive on the other hand is a drive to protect and defend and to most passionately protect and defend the females and puppies in the pack; i.e., mom and the kids. The pack protection drive is not activated without the presence of a threat. Well socialized dogs do not generally perceive the existence of a "threat" in normal human interactions and environments it has been socialized to interpret as normal. A child running across the yard has no chance of activating the pack protection drive in a dog that is familiar with children running and playing.

What Are The Characteristics Needed To Be A Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario?
For the novice person, the selection of a Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario puppy or dog for guarding potential, defending potential, show potential, or both should not be left solely to that individual. The assistance of experienced, professional Conquistador K-9 trainer and breeder is available for you through every step in the process - this is a big decision.
There are a few general characteristics necessary for any Presa Canario Puppy to become a Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario [click below photo for more info]:
This cannot be stressed enough! It is essential to see as many adult Presa Canarios in the pedigree of your potential puppy or trained dog as one can. It is also important to attempt to view any potential puppies on neutral ground, not their home turf. Any signs of fear, anxiety, or overt aggression (meaning unprovoked) should be avoided at all costs! Remember, what you see in the adults is in the pedigree of the puppies.
A Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario must be confident in himself and his surroundings to be a good guard, defend, show, or Triple Threat Conquistador k-9 Presa Canario. Is he curious about new sights and sounds or is he anxious? A Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario cannot be sound sensitive and cannot be shy about newcomers or new things if he is to be a competent and trusted Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario.
Some people will refer to this as dominance, but a better terminology is assertive. It is key that a puppy you're looking to fill the role of a Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario be assertive and bold in temperament. Out of a litter of puppies, which one is the first to approach new things? Who pushes his way to the front to get the toy? Assertive doesn't equate to aggressive or mean. It simply means that the Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario is comfortable, confident, and will get what he wants.
Guard, Defend, and Executive Conquistador K-9 Presa Canarios are not Labrador Retrievers by any means, but a level of sociability is required. Most standards for natural guard breeds list characteristics like "aloofness" and "wary with strangers". This is true and is classic in adult form, but aloof doesn't mean aggressive. A guard Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario must be able to acknowledge a stranger in its owner's presence without becoming intimidating.
This is very much related to a Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario's temperament, assertiveness, and confidence, but this is the drive the Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario has to protect itself and/or others. These defend, and executive protection Conquistador K-9 Presa Canarios are sensitive to the movement and actions of others, and while they will not start the fight, if the need arises, they will eagerly and without hesitation meet the challenge.
There are some breeds, like the Chow Chow, which are naturally suspicious of strangers, but they are independent and far less trainable than other breeds. Selection of the Presa Canario breed was carefully researched to ensure a high level of trainability as well as a proven track record of protection capability and potential to dominate the show rings.
Loyalty cannot be underestimated. A Conquistador K-9 Presa Canario that is bonded to an owner is far more likely to defend that person. A breed like the Presa Canario is known for a high level of owner devotion.
